U18 Australian Championships 2008 – Silver Medallists
Our U18s team won a silver medal at the 2008 Australian U18 Championships in Brisbane last week.
The team overcame a difficult draw facing top teams from around the country early in the
tournament to place 2nd in Pool A and progress through to the play-offs.
Up against a determined SNB in the elimination quarterfinals, the team showed how far
they had come holding them off in a nail-biter to win 9-8 and move through to the
semi-finals against an undefeated and rested Pool B winner Drummoyne that afternoon.
The girls remained in control and proved what a quality team they had become by
outplaying their well-drilled opposition 4-2 and progressing to the Grand Final against
their experienced first-game opponents and winners of Pool A, Cronulla.
Despite an even
second half, the early goal scoring of the all-star Cronulla team was enough for them
to hold on for the win and had SU finish with an amazing 2nd place out of 14 teams nation-wide.
The girls did a great job throughout the week, coming together against strong teams with
more depth and experience and having a great time while doing it. Their success at this
tournament shows great signs for the future of SUWWP.
Alicia Brightwell was the Highest Goal scorer for the tournament.
