NSW U16’s CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP – WOLLONGONG

8 - 10 FEBRUARY 2008

2 teams represented Sydney Uni in the NSW U16 Club Championship in Wollongong in February. Both teams achieved great success, surpassing expectations with their strong performances and representing the Navy and Gold of Sydney Uni with pride. The large parent support group that came down was great and an important part in the girl’s achievements over the weekend. Great work by both Hannah with the 16As, and Greg with the 16Bs, who gave a lot of time and effort to get the girls to their peak for the weekend. All the hard work paid off with great results and some positive signs for the many girls moving out of 16s this season, sure to make a solid move into the senior club ranks, and for those remaining in 16s, who are sure to use their experiences to be even more competitive next year. A fun weekend was had by all…as you can tell from the smiles in their team photos!

A special Congratulations goes to Catherine Watters & Jodie Mee who were selected in the NSW U16’s State Squad to compete later in the year.

Well done to all the girls, their coaches & managers, and families! Great effort by everyone involved!

Team Reports

16As

Coached by Hannah Ingle, the 16As proved to be a very competitive outfit scoring 46 goals & having only 15 scored against them – with 10 of those coming from the eventual championship winner, Drummoyne A, who had to play at their very best to defeat our girls - we held them to 4 – 2 into the third quarter! Through several consistently strong performances, our girls made the quarter finals only to lose in “golden goal extra-time” to finish a creditable 6th out of 22 teams, & although they may have lost the quarter final, they came away from the championships as winners, where their behaviour, sportsmanship, commitment & overall improvement were commented on by other clubs which was extremely pleasing & flattering.

16Bs

With a new coach and several new players, as well as being faced with a challenging draw, the 16Bs proved over the weekend that the only way is up for them, giving their best every game and gaining invaluable knowledge and experience that will see them grow significantly by next year’s tournament. Apart from the several hundred roundabouts we had to manouevre around town, and the leaving of players behind, overall, the weekend at Wollongong was a positive experience at which the entire team benefited from, as players and as girls. With each game they improved, gaining confidence and uniting together as a team. Even though they are a young team and this was their first time at the championships, they learnt from it and I am positive they will do great things next year. Beware of the Lions in 2009!
